Our verdict on ZoogVPN
Can a $2.49-a-month VPN actually be efficient in terms of speed and security? Our ZoogVPN review says mostly yes: AES-256 encryption, 10 connections, a kill switch, leak protection, the Shadow protocol for circumventing VPN blocks, and a home base in Greece, outside Five/Nine/Fourteen Eyes territory. That price is the two-year rate, and our tests showed under 6% download loss on European servers.
Keep in mind: ZoogVPN’s no-logs policy hasn’t been independently audited yet.

ZoogVPN pricing: how much does ZoogVPN cost?
ZoogVPN pricing runs on three tiers: one month costs $9.99; a year works out to $3.39 a month; two years drops to $2.49, charged as a single $59.99 payment, and few paid services offer lower costs. The best ZoogVPN deals cluster on that two-year term, so the lowest price only applies if you commit up front.
Watch the renewal price and 7-day refund window
Refunds close after seven days, versus the 30 most competitors offer. The discounted ZoogVPN price also covers the first term only, so check what the plan renews at before you commit.
Is the free plan actually useful?
The free plan gives you 10 GB of monthly traffic, five locations (Washington, London, Amsterdam, Düsseldorf, Singapore), one device, and basic 128-bit encryption. No card, no expiry. Best used to test connection quality before committing to a paid plan. You can discover the full list of features available within the free option in this table:

Is ZoogVPN safe to use?
ZoogVPN safety is ensured by several aspects: paid traffic runs on AES-256. Zoog Services IKE operates from Greece, outside the Five, Nine and Fourteen Eyes agreements, and publishes a warrant canary listing zero national security letters, gag orders and warrants. No independent auditor has examined the no-logs policy, which leaves it a company claim.
What ZoogVPN actually collects
Greece is an EU member state, so GDPR applies, and you get enforceable data rights. The ZoogVPN privacy policy lists what the company says it never collects: browsing history, sites visited, connection timestamps, IP addresses, session records. The exception is your email address, kept on file for billing and account purposes.
What the Google Play badge covers
The Android app got a Level 2 Mobile Application Security Assessment at an authorized lab and took the Google Play Verified badge. MASA tests against the OWASP mobile standard, so an assessor examined how the Zoog VPN app stores sensitive data, enforces encryption, and survives common attacks.
Security features: what you actually get
Advanced VPN protocols
ZoogVPN supports OpenVPN, IKEv2/IPsec, WireGuard, Shadow, and ZoogTLS, with L2TP and PPTP retained for older hardware. PPTP should be avoided: its encryption has been considered broken for years. The AES-256 figure applies to OpenVPN and IKEv2; WireGuard uses ChaCha20. Our speed tests ran on WireGuard in the macOS app. In the FAQ section, ZoogVPN provides more details for the use case of each protocol:
| VPN Protocol | Speed | Encryption | Stability | Streaming | Torrenting | P2P | In-app availability | Compatibility |
| WireGuard | Very fast | Very strong | Good | Good | Good | Good | Yes | Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux, Routers |
| IKEv2/IPSec | Fast | Strong | Very stable | Good | Good | Good | Yes | Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux |
| OpenVPN (UDP) | Fast | Very strong | Good | Good | Good | Good | Yes | Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux, Routers |

Shadow: ZoogVPN’s answer to VPN blocking
Shadow is ZoogVPN’s own obfuscation protocol, built to get a connection through networks that block standard VPN traffic. Censorship systems do not block VPNs by IP address alone. Deep packet inspection reads the shape of a connection, recognises a standard VPN handshake and kills it, which is why an app that works in Berlin goes dead in Shanghai. Shadow wraps the tunnel in an obfuscated proxy layer so the traffic presents as ordinary HTTPS.
Separately, the company has said it runs ZoogVPN Shadowsocks and v2ray in censored regions.
Kill switch, split tunneling and leak protection
ZoogVPN split tunneling and the kill switch are two ZoogVPN features where platform support deserves a closer look. The company says the kill switch blocks internet access if the VPN connection drops, preventing your real IP from being exposed, and currently lists support for Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. Our DNS leak test came back clean. Split tunneling is more platform-dependent: ZoogVPN offers it on Android and has also added it to Windows, letting you choose which apps use the VPN and which connect normally.
What about Smart DNS?
ZoogVPN handles DNS inside the VPN tunnel rather than as a standalone Smart DNS product. Connect, and your queries route through ZoogVPN’s servers instead of your ISP’s, along with encryption, the ad blocker, leak protection, the kill switch, Shadow, and split tunneling.
That covers what most users want from the ZoogVPN Smart DNS feature. A standalone Smart DNS reroutes queries to change which streaming library you see, and it encrypts nothing and hides no IP address. Routing DNS through the tunnel handles both at once. For a smart TV or console that cannot run the app, router setup gets you there.
Our leak test: with ZoogVPN off, our queries resolved through our ISP. With it connected, the DNS servers changed completely, with no overlap. That is a clean result, so ZoogVPN passed the test successfully.
Can ZoogVPN get through the Great Firewall?
ZoogVPN is built for it. A Chinese-language publication, DigitalCruch, tested from inside the mainland for its 2026 list and placed ZoogVPN first among free VPNs that still bypass the Great Firewall. The Shadow protocol disguises the tunnel as ordinary HTTPS, and ZoogVPN publishes mirror addresses for users who cannot reach the main site from behind the firewall, plus WeChat Pay and Alipay support that most Western providers lack.
How many servers does ZoogVPN have?
ZoogVPN network lists 150+ locations across 55+ countries, which is broad coverage for a provider at this price and enough that most users will find a server close to them. The network is smaller than NordVPN’s thousands or Surfshark’s 100-country spread, and it continues to expand.
Streaming is decent; torrenting is better
Zoog claims 20 Netflix regions plus Disney+, Hulu and BBC iPlayer on dedicated streaming servers. We confirm Netflix US, UK and Canada along with iPlayer and Disney+, with results shifting server to server. Torrenting is the stronger case: P2P servers are labelled in the app, and several carry SOCKS5, which is uncommon in the budget tier.
Our speed tests: surprisingly quick nearby
ZoogVPN is fast nearby, but distance hits uploads hard. ZoogVPN speed cost under 6% of download throughput on every European server we tested and 14.7% on the longest hop to Singapore. As part of the ZoogVPN review 2026, we ran the tests on 19 August 2026, using WireGuard in the macOS app. Baseline without the VPN: 296.16 Mbps down, 295.37 Mbps up, 4 ms ping.

| Server | Download | Change | Upload | Change | Ping |
| No VPN (baseline) | 296.16 Mbps | n/a | 295.37 Mbps | n/a | 4 ms |
| Helsinki, Finland | 282.38 Mbps | -4.7% | 277.43 Mbps | -6.1% | 33 ms |
| Washington, DC | 281.97 Mbps | -4.8% | 170.29 Mbps | -42.3% | 118 ms |
| Vienna, Austria | 281.74 Mbps | -4.9% | 212.65 Mbps | -28.0% | 51 ms |
| Amsterdam, Netherlands | 279.02 Mbps | -5.8% | 181.25 Mbps | -38.6% | 40 ms |
| Buffalo, New York | 272.35 Mbps | -8.0% | 226.85 Mbps | -23.2% | 124 ms |
| Hong Kong | 271.61 Mbps | -8.3% | 173.21 Mbps | -41.4% | 202 ms |
| Singapore | 252.65 Mbps | -14.7% | 189.24 Mbps | -35.9% | 190 ms |
Our ZoogVPN speed test showed that download is kept steady almost everywhere. Washington gave up under 5%, remarkable for a transatlantic hop, and even Hong Kong stayed above 271 Mbps.

Upload is where distance shows. Helsinki lost 6%; Washington lost 42%, Hong Kong 41%, Amsterdam 39%. If you push large files upstream, pick the closest server you can.

Latency scales with distance. Four milliseconds became 33 ms nearby and 202 ms in Hong Kong: invisible for streaming, fatal for competitive gaming outside your region.

The method has limits worth stating. We ran each location once, from one machine, and Speedtest selects an endpoint near the VPN exit rather than holding one server fixed.
Apps, support and user sentiment
Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, routers and Android TV, plus browser extensions. The extensions are proxies, moving your browser’s apparent location without encrypting anything else. We found apps easy to learn and thin on settings. Support answers over 24/7 live chat and email, with response times drawing praise.
89% rate the service positively, most often citing the price against the feature set, the number of devices per subscription, and connection quality on nearby European servers.
11% report problems. The recurring three: the seven-day refund window closing before they had finished testing, streaming access that works one week and fails the next, and slow speeds on distant servers. Support response times draw both praise and complaint, which usually means the channel matters: live chat resolves faster than email.

FAQs
Is ZoogVPN free?
ZoogVPN has a free plan. It offers 10 GB a month, five server locations (US, UK, Netherlands, Germany, Singapore), one device, and 128-bit encryption. No credit card is required, and there’s no expiry. Streaming servers and AES-256 are available only in the paid version, and plans open at $2.49 a month on the two-year term.
What is the ZoogVPN Shadow protocol?
Shadow is ZoogVPN’s own obfuscation protocol. It disguises VPN traffic as ordinary HTTPS so deep packet inspection cannot recognise and block it, and ZoogVPN aims it at China, Russia, Iran, Turkey, the UAE and Qatar, publishing dated status checks for each.
Does ZoogVPN work with Netflix?
The service advertises 20 Netflix regions on dedicated streaming servers, available to paid subscribers. Independent reviewers confirm the US, UK and Canadian libraries, though which server works varies. Free servers unblock nothing. BBC iPlayer, Disney+ and Hulu open on selected servers.
Is ZoogVPN good for torrenting?
ZoogVPN permits P2P traffic and labels dedicated torrenting servers inside its apps, with SOCKS5 on several, unusual at this price. The kill switch and DNS leak protection cover the basics.
Does ZoogVPN keep logs?
ZoogVPN solution claims it stores no browsing activity, visited sites, connection timestamps, IP addresses, or session records, keeping your email for account management. A warrant canary reports zero government requests.
Does ZoogVPN work in China or Russia?
ZoogVPN in China depends entirely on the Shadow protocol, which targets both countries. Dated status checks cover six censored regions. Independent testing gives mixed results, with some reviewers connecting fine and others reporting failures in China. Set up manual IP resolution before travelling, because some networks block the app itself
