Best VPN Services of 2026: Compare Before You Buy
A cheap first year doesn't always mean a cheap VPN. Renewal bills can jump, two competing brands may share an owner, and “no-logs” claims matter more when someone has checked them. Compare the real costs and privacy details before you choose.
Top VPN providers — October 2026
A low price, a strong privacy record and a long refund window rarely come in one package, so use this list to build a shortlist, not to crown one winner. Order is editorial, based on published pricing, audits and features, not on a single score.
- 1
ZoogVPN Value + free plan
A budget-friendly starting point if you want to try a VPN without paying first. The free tier has a data limit, so it suits light use better than daily streaming.
What to check: 7-day refund window; no independent no-logs auditfrom $2.49/mo27 months · $59.99 upfront - 2
Proton VPN Privacy
A strong choice if privacy matters more to you than the lowest price. Securitum audits its no-logs policy every year, and Proton publishes the reports.
What to check: the free plan covers 1 device and picks the server country for youfrom $3.49/mo2-year plan · renews at $83.88/yr - 3
Surfshark Unlimited devices
If several people need protection across phones, computers and TVs, unlimited connections make one subscription enough for the whole home.
What to check: Starter renews at $79/yr, far above the intro ratefrom $2.49/mo27 months · $67.23 upfront - 4
CyberGhost Long refund
A simple option if watching shows is a main reason you want a VPN, with streaming servers and 45 days to change your mind on longer plans.
What to check: 7 devices; 14-day refund on the monthly planfrom $2.19/mo26 months · renews at $56.94/yr - 5
Private Internet Access More controls
A fit if you want more control over your connection, use torrents, or need SOCKS5 and port forwarding. It is less of a plug-and-play streaming pick.
What to check: US jurisdiction; US and UK Netflix are unreliablefrom $2.03/mo3 years + 3 months · $79 - 6
Windscribe Flexible plan
Good when you want to pay for a few locations without a long deal. The free plan gives 10 GB a month with a confirmed email.

How TechToLead evaluates VPN services
Our review framework covers the real cost over time (intro price, renewal and refund terms), the privacy record (no-logs audits, ownership and jurisdiction), device limits, apps and protocols, and how each VPN handles streaming and everyday use. We separate provider claims from results backed by dated tests, and marketing claims aren’t test results.

Which VPN do you need?
Start with what you need the VPN for. Paying for features you won’t use only makes the subscription more expensive.
| Your goal | What matters | VPNs to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday privacy | A named no-logs audit and a kill switch (it cuts traffic if the VPN drops) | Proton VPN, Surfshark, NordVPN |
| Streaming | Recent independent results, not just a provider promise | Windscribe, Surfshark, Proton VPN (paid plans) |
| Torrenting | P2P support, plus port forwarding and SOCKS5 if your client needs them | Private Internet Access, ZoogVPN, PrivateVPN |
| Free browsing | The data limit, ads, server choice and how the free plan is paid for | Proton VPN, Windscribe, ZoogVPN, TunnelBear |
| Lots of devices | Unlimited connections or a limit that covers your home | Surfshark, Private Internet Access, Windscribe, IPVanish |
| Sign-up without email | An account number instead of an email address, and cash payment | Mullvad (€5/month) |
WireGuard is the modern, fast way to build a VPN connection. Obfuscation makes VPN traffic harder for a network to recognise or block, which matters on restrictive Wi-Fi and in some countries.

VPN ads lead with a tiny monthly price. We would start with a different question: what will you pay over the next two or three years? The cheapest first bill is not always the cheapest VPN.
Look past the monthly headline. A $2.49/month offer is usually one upfront charge for two years or more, and the second bill can be for a different term. Surfshark Starter costs $67.23 for 27 months, then $79 a year.
Ask who checked the no-logs claim. Look for a named auditor, a year and a scope. Proton publishes Securitum reports; others list Deloitte, KPMG or Cure53. An audit is evidence, not a lifelong promise.
Read the refund terms. CyberGhost gives 45 days on six-month and longer plans but only 14 on the monthly plan. Windscribe and ZoogVPN give 7 days, and only if you’ve used under 10 GB.
Count your devices. Unlimited connections matter for a busy home and much less for one person. Mullvad allows 5 devices, CyberGhost 7 and most others 10.
Know who owns it. Several big brands share a parent company. If you switch to get away from one company, check the ownership table below first.
About free VPNs: Known providers offer free plans with stated limits, such as Proton VPN, Windscribe and ZoogVPN. An unfamiliar free app is a different proposition: look at its owner, privacy policy and how it makes money before you trust it with your traffic.
Who owns your VPN?
Different VPN brands can share a parent company. That matters when you switch because you want a different company to handle your traffic.
| Owner | VPN brands |
|---|---|
| Nord Security | NordVPN, Surfshark |
| Kape Technologies | ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, Private Internet Access |
| Proton Foundation (main shareholder) | Proton VPN |
| Ziff Davis | IPVanish |
| McAfee | TunnelBear |
| Miss Group | PrivateVPN |
| Independent companies | Windscribe, Mullvad, ZoogVPN |

VPN or proxy: two tools for different jobs
Both can change the IP address a website sees, but they solve different problems. A VPN protects all traffic between your device and the VPN server, across every app. A proxy routes only the app or browser you configure, and its encryption depends on the setup. Neither makes you invisible.
| Choose a VPN when… | Choose a proxy when… |
|---|---|
| You want one encrypted tunnel for the whole device on public Wi-Fi | You need many IP addresses or precise locations for a script or tool |
| You want a simple privacy tool for everyday browsing and streaming | You run web scraping, price monitoring or ad checks |

Frequently asked questions
Which VPN is best?
There is no single best VPN for everyone. Proton VPN is worth a look for privacy and a free plan, Surfshark for a home with lots of devices, and Windscribe for flexible billing. Start with what matters most to you, then read the full review.
How much does a VPN cost?
Long-term intro offers in our October 2026 comparison start at about $1.69 to $3.49 a month. They are usually billed upfront, and the renewal can be much higher. Mullvad is the exception, with a flat €5 a month.
Do I need a VPN?
A VPN keeps your browsing private from the local Wi-Fi network and your internet provider, and websites usually see the VPN server’s IP address instead of yours. It doesn’t stop scams, make weak passwords safe or hide who you are when you log in to an account.
Are free VPNs safe?
Known providers such as Proton VPN, Windscribe and ZoogVPN offer free plans with clear limits. Be more careful with an unfamiliar app that says little about its owner or how it makes money.
Does a VPN hide my IP address?
Usually, yes: websites see the VPN server’s IP address while you’re connected. A VPN doesn’t make you anonymous, and an app that bypasses the VPN can still reveal your usual connection. Learn more in our guide to IP addresses.
Is a VPN the same as incognito mode?
No. Incognito mode stops your browser from keeping history and cookies after the session. A VPN changes how your connection reaches the internet and hides your usual IP address from websites. See what incognito mode does.
Can one VPN cover all my devices?
It depends on the plan. Surfshark, Private Internet Access, IPVanish, Windscribe and TunnelBear allow unlimited connections, while Mullvad allows 5 and CyberGhost 7. Check the device limit before you buy for a whole household.
Is using a VPN legal?
VPNs are legal in most countries, but some restrict or ban them. The law still applies to what you do online with a VPN, so check local rules if you travel or live somewhere with internet restrictions.
